Fantasy Coffins

Coffin-making demonstration/installation runs October 31-November 4
OCAC Centrum Courtyard

Eric Adjetey Anang is the grandson of Kane Kwei who first designed and made fantasy coffins in Teshie, Ghana. In the early 1950's Kane Kwei's grandmother died and her lifelong fantasy was to fly, so he made an airplane coffin to help her pass into the afterlife. Others in the Ga community liked what Kane Kwei had created and encouraged him to make fantasy coffins for them, and a business began.

Eric worked in the shop off and on since he was 8 years old learning from his grandfather and his father, Cedi. When Eric was 20, instead of going to college, he took over the shop from his father and has been running the business with 6 to 10 apprentices ever since.

Kane Kwei's Fantasy Coffins are in museums and galleries around the world. Eric has pieces in the Royal Ontario Museum and a private collection in Antwerp, Belgium. He has traveled to Europe; Russia; and Seoul, South Korea demonstrating his unique craft and art.

Project prompted from a song/story:

"There is a war between the rich and poor a war between the man and the woman. There is a war between the left and right, a war between the black and white; a war between the odd and the even."

There is a tiny Tipi that sits upon my desk

It brings wisdom and inspiration

It may merely be plastic, but it's shape and history have meaning

This tiny Tipi speaks to a home I hope
to build someday

A home that can only be built on courage and strength

This tiny Tipi is a mighty Tipi

"This is a cold water fibre reactive dye (referred to as Procion MX). Excellent for immersion, direct application, microwave and many other techniques. The dyes produce very brilliant colours that are both light fast and wash fast to all natural fibres. These dyes also will dye jute, wood paper and basketry materials."

The burning house

"If your house was burning, what would you take with you? It's a conflict between what's practical, valuable and sentimental. What you would take reflects your interests, background and priorities. Think of it as an interview condensed into one question."

This is a prompt for a great photo based project that you can find HERE

I'm considering what I would choose...

Northbound

secretly writing while riding

soft sounds in my ears with a screaming train of thought

trees pass at the sound of light as I sit paralyzed

I would like to sit amongst the pines endlessly

to sit, to inhale may be the best medicine

-willkommen juli-
i've been moody lately. moody can be fine, but tiresome. sometimes it leads to bonuses at work; sometimes it leads to bicycle accidents.
