Fantasy Coffins

Coffin-making demonstration/installation runs October 31-November 4
OCAC Centrum Courtyard

Eric Adjetey Anang is the grandson of Kane Kwei who first designed and made fantasy coffins in Teshie, Ghana. In the early 1950's Kane Kwei's grandmother died and her lifelong fantasy was to fly, so he made an airplane coffin to help her pass into the afterlife. Others in the Ga community liked what Kane Kwei had created and encouraged him to make fantasy coffins for them, and a business began.

Eric worked in the shop off and on since he was 8 years old learning from his grandfather and his father, Cedi. When Eric was 20, instead of going to college, he took over the shop from his father and has been running the business with 6 to 10 apprentices ever since.

Kane Kwei's Fantasy Coffins are in museums and galleries around the world. Eric has pieces in the Royal Ontario Museum and a private collection in Antwerp, Belgium. He has traveled to Europe; Russia; and Seoul, South Korea demonstrating his unique craft and art.
